Merlin surveyed the village, now in ashes that still sent curls of choking smoke into the air. Bodies of men lay scattered about; killed because they were too old to be slaves, not worth much as hostages, or they’d fought back. Nearby a woman, a staff still in her clutch, gazed sightlessly at the gray sky, the sword thrust to her chest evidenced by the blackened blood. There were more horrors, which he cared not to see…
